How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video Charles the Humble Mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is situated near the edges of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via an uncolored wire (T55/49) and then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is located on the edge of transmission, just above the flywheel ring. The sensor transmits an electrical signal through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU uses this information to regulate boost and fuel. It also sends an indicator to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used as a reference point to connect with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is so it can activate spark and injectors accordingly.

If this sensor fails to function, the ECU will display an error code P00160. This indicates that the Crank Shaft is out of line with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate the possibility of a chain stretch or jump in the chain link of the upper chain of timing. However the code will not appear on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

Testing is a bit challenging because there are two connector pins and they perform different functions however the best method to test it is to measure resistance between the sensor and the ECU. 2. Injectors

Yesterday accelerating full speed from highway paytoll, i experienced massive power loss like the engine is running out of gas or the injectors aren't firing at all. In the morning, i removed the spark plugs, 3 were drenched in gazoline, the fourth one was dry. I placed a tissue over each injector hole, and when i start the engine without sparks, the three that have gazoline pop right out. The 4th one stays closed. I checked the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30, and 48/55. I got 0ohm. So i assume the problem is in another place.

I also tried to reset the PID but with no luck. The car will start when the G28 is disconnected, but it is running fine audi replacement keys with the G28 connected.
